Where does Cashmere come from?
Almost all of global cashmere hair is farmed in Inner Mongolia in China. Coming from the cashmere goat the hair is sheered off once a year in early spring similar to taking wool from a sheep. The finest and longest hairs sit on the chest and under belly of the goat. Once the hair is sheered it is cleaned, washed, assorted and prepared into loose clean fleece layer prior to going be spun into yarn.
These preparation processes are predominantly done in washing facilities in Inner Mongolia whilst the spinning of the yarn takes place in mills closer to the knitting factories in different provinces in China.
What is pilling?
Cashmere yarn contains both long and short hair fibres. These short fibres can shift out of the yarn strand over time and build up in to pill balls on the surface of the garment. This is especially the case in areas that rub during wearing. Pilling is totally natural and does not mean there is a problem with the garment. The pill balls can be easily removed with a wool comb or by hand. A dry clean now and then also helps to reduce the number of pill balls.
Is cashmere hard to care for?
No but cashmere is a luxurious natural fibre that must be cared for in the appropriate way. Hand washing is the best and safest way to keep your cashmere looking new, fresh and ensure the hand feel remains soft and cozy.
